Oups, i have not written anything about my lousy reading month January. I am not sure if you know the feeling... i somehow was scared to be reading too fast and so i took ages reading just two books. I am so sure i could have munched away four books in dark January...

Henning Mankell - Daisy Sisters
The two pen pals Elna and Vivi spend the summer of 1941 together on a bike tour. Their light hearts suddenly get darker when Elna is raped by a soldier and finds herself pregnant. After an attempted abortion fails she gives birth to her daughter Eivor in 1942. When Eivor tries to get away from home and build a life of her own she, too, is with child faster than intended. Her daughter Linda seems to continue the difficult family history as well.
Even though you might be worried that a male author could not possibly get such stories right, Mankell writes in such a forceful way that this becomes unbearably intense at times. Recommended.

Don Shaw - The Hike
You accompany three retired gentleman who meet for a weekly hike. Freddy is the funny one who always complains about the "gruppenführer" Phil who is their navigator and tries to escape old age by dashing up hills and breaking his own records. Don is the rather silent narrator who tells us about local history. They all have different ways of coping with old age and the world.
At the beginning i liked the way those three guys talked to one another and it even had me laughing at times but towards the end i got bored by all the descriptions and i just couldn't figure out where the story was going. Is still don't know. Maybe i'll give it another try when i am older and into hiking.
