Wem Ken Follett's "Fall of Giants"  (dt. "Sturz der Titanen") gefallen hat, sollte die Trilogie mit "Winter of the World" (dt. "Winter der Welt") auch ruhig weiter fortsetzen. Spannend bis zum Schluss!

In August i have seen no other movies than those offered by the French-German channel arte. This could have meant having more time to read but i only managed my average two books. Both of them are definetely worth reading, though.

Dennis Lehane - Moonlight Mile
content: When Patrick Kenzie is asked to find 16-years-old Amanda McCready he hesitates because he already had found her once when she had been a four-year-old, only to bring her back to a cold dysfunctional home with a neglectful mother. It seems like the bright and picture perfect student tries to escape her upbringing and home once more. Patrick takes the case and promises to really save Amanda this time.
opinion: The style of writing and the language of the main characters is highly entertaining. There are several pages that you just need to share, e.g. when Patrick talks about how teenagers ... like... use the English language... like. You should maybe read "Prayers For Rain" first but although i did not i had fun following the characters in their story... recommendable read!

Ken Follett - Winter of the World
content: After "Fall of Giants" we find ourselves facing another World War, this time following the children of the families we have already met. In Germany the story is centered around Carla von Ulrich, in the U.S. we follow Daisy Peshkov and Woody Dewar, in Great Britain we observe the story of Lloyd Williams and in Russia it is Volodya Peshkov who gives us a closer look on world history. It starts in 1933 with the seizure of power by the Nazis and Europe's reactions. We see the Spanish Civil War and the effects of Russia's "help". We see how the World War starts with Germany's invasion of Poland but we also follow the events between the USA and Japan. During those hard years we experience the people's suffering, horrible Nazi crimes, bomb research and building, the foundation of the United Nations and finally the beginning of the Cold War.
opinion: He did it again. Even though i am not the biggest fan of 20th century history Follett easily draws your attention and keeps it till the last page. As you experience world history through approachable characters certain events are easier to re-experience, even though that hurts most of the time. Nothing is just black and white but the grey is not as varied as it could be. Sometimes good characters are a bit too shiny and bad ones too dark. I had more fun finishing this book than the first one - at some point i even tried to put it away more often to stay with the characters as long as possible. I can not wait for the final book!
